Shenas Nameh

The Shenasnameh, or “Writ of Identity” in Persian, is the Iranian identity booklet. It serves as a fundamental identity document for Iranian citizens. Here’s a breakdown of its key aspects:

  1. Purpose:
    • It’s a primary form of identification within Iran.
    • It records essential personal information.
    • It is needed for many official procedures, including voting.
  2. Content:
    • The Shenasnameh contains detailed personal data, such as:
      • Full name and gender.
      • Date and place of birth (according to the Solar Hijri calendar).
      • Parents’ names and information.
      • Marital status and details of spouses.
      • Information about children.
      • A space for recording death.
    • It also contains the persons national identity number.
  3. Issuance and Usage:
    • It’s issued to Iranian citizens at birth by the National Organization for Civil Registration of Iran.
    • It’s used for various official transactions, like registering for services, travel within Iran, and participating in elections.
    • While the Shenasnameh has been a very important document, Iran has also moved towards the use of National ID cards.
